The best hacks for surviving travel from a travel journalist

The best hacks for surviving travel from a travel journalistThe best hacks for surviving travel from a travel journalistSo many people have to travel regularly for work that it seems like more of a chore than an experience. In 2016 U.S. travelers took458.9 million domesticbusiness trips and this is expected to reach478.2 million by 2020. However, for most, traveling elend only satiates their need of wanderlust, but it helps them feel more creative. You may not feel you have that actual wanderlust gene (the strong desire to travel) that so many people have, butaccording to a survey commissioned by Curio Collection, 91% of the population considers themselves to be curious and 73% of people say that traveling is their go-to outlet to express their curiosity. The survey also found that more than 90% of people take trips to learn something new, 79% consider learning something new while on vacation a priority and 55%of travelers say that vacations are primarily a way to explore, not to relax . Over 60% describe the perfect travel companion as someone who is curious. As for which group of people tends to be the most curious about travels, Millennial women come in first. They are twice as likely as general travelers to be Culturalists travelers who enjoy fine arts also.Someone who knows that need to feed her curiosity through traveling isAshlan Cousteau, a travel and entertainment journalist for E, Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel (and she is the grand-daughter-in-law ofJacques-Yves Cousteau and daughter-in-law of Phillipe Cousteau) who partnered with theCurio Collection by Hiltonon this survey and campaign.Ladders spoke with her about making a career out of traveland also surviving it with some of her best hacks for staying healthy, happy and curious. On being curious, but not having wanderlustIts always been my lifelong goal to be and stay curious, so thats why I was a bit surprised when I found out I dont have the DRD4-7R gene, better known as the wanderlust g ene. This gene is believed to be associated with people who have a propensity for travel and discovery, and only 20% of the human population has it.On keeping sane while traveling 24/7Traveling can take a lot out of you, so I try and bring small comforts with me while I travel. For example, a favorite cashmere sweater, warm socks and even a small blanket that I always put over my pension pillow to make it feel familiar to me. When I do get to sleep in my own bed, I try and give myself a full day to recover and do laundry, and just be in my space. Plus, when Philippe and I are able to travel together, it never feels like we are really away from home because we have each other. On knowing travel was her careerMy parents instilled a love of travel in my sister and I at a very young age. We were so lucky to grow up knowing that there was a giant world out there to explore withdifferent cultures, different languages and incredible beauty. There was a show on E called Wild On, where the hos t traveled to picturesque locations, had amazing experiences and found great food and nightlife. Once I saw that show I knew I wanted to be a host and travel the world. I graduated from the School of Journalism at he University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and while I studied hard news, I knew I needed to make my way to travel and entertainment. On how people approach travel in the year 2018 compared to the olden daysThe first difference is that flying was so different back in the day. I remember my family putting on fancy clothes to fly- dresses and blazer were a must. No yogapants back then, though the latter is so much more comfortable to fly in. A big way social media has changed traveling immensely is that now independent hotels like those that make up Curio Collection by Hilton can connect directly and instantly with their customers. Unique, one-of-a-kind experiences are growing even more important to travelers and thanks to the Internet someone can totally curate their en tire trip before even reaching their destination. However, one big piece of advice I have for those traveling is while you are on vacation having a fabulous experience PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN Yes, take a photo or two, but then turn off your WiFi, be present in themoment, and truly absorb your surroundings. Thats why you went on vacation in the first place Dont waste your vacation time scrolling through Instagram. It will all be there when you get back home.On working and traveling with her husband Philippe Cousteau Jr.Traveling and working alongside my husband is truly a blessing. Philippe is my best friend, a wonderful work partner and the absolute best travel buddy. Every day we spend together is the best day. We respect each other and complement one another so well. Im the luckiest girl. When he is having an off day, I pick up the slack and vice versa. Sometimes Im the gas and he is the brake, and some days its the other way around. We just work.On staying healthy while traveling cons tantlyI never eat airplane food because the salt alone will swell you up like a balloon. Food is really important when we travel, and we try to eat a lot of fresh veggies and fruits and stay away from meat on the road. My little secret weapon is apple cider vinegar. I always carry a 3oz bottle of it and when I feel like Im getting a sore throat I gargle with it a few times and it usually knocks out whatever it is.On your best hacks for working when traveling? My first piece of advice is to try and get on your destinations time zone as soon as you sit down on your flight. Jetlag is real, but it can be managed. The earlier you start to adjust, the better. If you are on a vacation but know you need to do work, platzdeckchen aside a specific hour or two every day to go through emails, then put the computer and your phone away. Most importantly, give yourself a little slack when traveling. Your co-workers will understand if you take a little longer to get back to them if you are halfway a cross the world. When you let yourself be distracted by that important email you have to send that very moment, thats when briefcases get left in cabs, wallets get left at restaurants, or computers stay in seatback pockets when you deplane.

Professors Resume From the Classroom to the Boardroom

Professors Resume From the Classroom to the BoardroomProfessors Resume From the Classroom to the BoardroomAn IT security professional receives a resume makeoverBridgitt Ann Robertson never thought she was conducting two separate careers. Her career in IT security at several enterprises and two masters degrees led zu sich to begin teaching college and graduate-school classes part time. In 2003, when she wanted to work from home to care for her mother, who had lost a leg to cancer, she left the corporate world and began teaching fulltime as an online instructor. She now teaches online classes in business and information assurance, the practice of securing proprietary data and information, at four colleges. She is also finishing her own doctorate in business administration. To Robertson, her progress made perfect sense but on a resume it appeared as if she had lived two separate and disparate careers. That split became a problem when Robertson decided to make her next move, back to the c orporate world. With her mother now healthy and living with her in the Atlanta suburb of Peachtree City, Ga., Robertson wants to work again among co-workers and add travel to her job requirements. In fragestellung 2008, she began to look for jobs in corporate training, essentially teaching the same subject she taught as a professor, but to employees in a corporate environment. But she was worried employers wouldnt be able to relate her experience in academia to the the corporate world or understand that her earlier role in corporate IT security would equip her to teach the subject. Her resume was a void between theory and practice, she said, that didnt connect seamlessly to her goal of a career in corporate training.Robertson turned to Ladders resume team to put the pieces together. Her resume had two different elements of her career online teaching and IT consulting neither of which really spoke to what she wanted to do, said Donald Burns, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders. It was two separate things, nothing to tie them together, no focus on where she was going next.2 + 2 = 5Describing multiple career tracks and aptitudes is a common resume challenge that opens many pitfalls, Burns said.People want to show everything they can do, or dont want to close off one aspect of their career for another, he said. Or they tweak their experience so that it fits the job theyre applying for. Neither way works.Robertsons first attempts at doing a resume herself listed the separate jobs she had held and a summary that tried to wrap up her qualifications in each line of work corporate IT security and academia.I didnt really know how to write about myself to make it all fit together, she said. I was afraid that to make it look like a fit I might miss something important or embellish something important.Burns turned a set of fresh eyes to the problem. Your experience is history, he said. You never really want to alter that history. You can improve the presentation, but those are history. The answer, Burns said, is to apply a focused title and summary at the top of your resume that encompasses your entire experience and how it relates to the next step. That lets the experience and descriptions support the argument on their own.The title and the summary is where you make that transition, Burns said. The title and the summary are where you explain that the sum is greater than the parts. The job descriptions support it, but its where 2 + 2 = 5. In Robertsons case, the pair added a title, Online Educator Corporate Trainer, that summed up her current position and her anticipated position. It forced her to make a decision about how she wanted to present herself, he said. And the rest kind of just came from that.Burns and Robertson used the summary to tie together the sum of her career into a single experience track training in information assuranceAccomplished online educator and corporate trainer with extensive experience making c omplex topics understandable. Academic and business background in IT consulting and process analysis. Uses real-world examples and firsthand working experience to illustrate complex principles. Highly commended by students and corporate trainees for meticulous follow-up and eagerness to engage everybody in class discussions and assignments. Extensive experience improving presentation and content of online teaching programs. Competent French and Spanish. Learning Chinese. The final version makes it clear that Robertsons experience is not just theory. The thing is that the students I teach now are likely the same students I would teach in a corporation, Robertson said. These are not young students theyre adults earning degrees and skills for their job, most are even there on behalf of their company. In a sense, she said. I never stopped working in the field. I am still in it and instructing those who are. I just didnt know how to bring that out in my resume.

The Toughest Interview Question and How to Answer It

The Toughest Interview Question and How to Answer ItThe Toughest Interview Question and How to Answer ItTell me about yurself. This one simple little question makes even the most confident candidates sweat in a job interview. A million thoughts rush through your mind What exactly should I share? Should I try to build rapport? should I show Im perfect for the job?Never fear, job seeker. There is a very simple formula that will help you easily answer this question.Heres how to answer Tell me about yourselfThe first thing to remember is this isnt an invitation to recite your entire life story or to go through each bullet point listed on your resume. This is your first and best opportunity to pitch the recruiter on why you are perfect for the position.First, you should start with the present because thats where you are now. Then you can segue into your past (but not too far) and tell them a little about the experiences you have had and the skills gained in your previous position. Wrap it up by talking about the future, and why youre really excited about this particular opportunity.Lets look at an exampleYou could respond to the question like this At my current position as an account executive with Smith Company, I solely managed three of our top performing clients. Before that, I handled two different major national accounts at an ad agency. While I really enjoyed the work at both places, Id love to explore the opportunities in management with one specific company. And thats why I am so excited about this opportunity with Jones Corporation.Throughout your reply, remember to focus on experiences and skills that will be the most relevant for a hiring manager when they think about filling this particular position within the company.Dont be afraid to relax a little, tell a few stories and maybe a joke (just keep it clean). They already have your resume but now they want to know a little more about youHow do you relax?Dont speak too fastStop yourself from shaking (squeez e your buttocks or thigh muscles sounds weird but it works)Stop your voice from shaking (do some vocal exercises before you go into the interview)Stand up while you wait but dont paceFind your best sitting positionShow your hands (place your hands on the table during the interview)Make the other person feel special by being genuinely interested in what they have to sayListen to hear, not to respondUse your own voice, not some formal public speaking voiceBe yourselfRemember, youre already on the shortlist You made it to an interview, so they already think highly of you. Just slow down, listen and be yourself. If you do that, youll come across as confident, authentic and relaxed.

Trustworthy and open managers are most valued

Trustworthy and open managers are most valued Trustworthy and open managers are most valuedPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Trustworthiness and openness are now seen as the most important characteristics of a good manager, according to the latest L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Employment and Direction) Survey of more than 3000 employees across Australia and New Zealand. This result highlights a marked change since last year, when trustworthiness and openness ranked only seventh on the list. Employee expectations of managers have changed dramatically over the past year according to Grant Sexton, Managing Director of Leadership Management Australasia (LMA), who conducted the research. Clearly, if organisations want to improve the wertmiger zuwachs and productivity of their business they must foster trust and embrace openness in their workplace, says Sexton. Employees, frustrated with the extended period of lack of appreciation in their efforts and sacrifices to support their company throu gh the difficulties of the GFC, are expecting managers to step up with a truthful and honest approach to what the future holds. Managers need to demonstrate to employees that they are willing to listen to employees and their input in order to earn their trust. In other words, managers have to win back the trust lost during the GFC, when many organisations cut back on staff, froze salaries and instituted more rigorous working conditions. In addition to trustworthiness/openness, other increasing priorities for employees include being given the space to do their work and receive support (up from fifth to equal second) and being given the resources needed to do their job (up from equal eleventh to seventh). Being given regular feedback and challenging work, on the other hand, have decreased in relative importance. To re-earn their employees trust, managers will increasingly need to allow their employees the space to manage their own work, provide the necessary support and resources to do so, and be willing to provide feedback and recognition regularly, says Sexton. Furthermore, it is essential that managers fulfil their promises and walk the talk. Top 10 characteristics of good managers November 2010 1. Is trustworthy and open in approach =2. Clearly communicates where we are going =2. Gives me the space to do my work, but supports me 4. Listens to and respects my input into decisions 5. Gives regular and honest feedback on how I am going 6. Is fair and even-handed/makes reasonable demands =7. Provides the resources I need to do my job =7. Recognises me for extra efforts/results 9. Coaches and develops me 10. Trusts me with challenging work It might pay for employers to take heed of these findings, given the results of another L.E.A.D. survey indicating that employees are mucksmuschenstill feeling restless despite being somewhat less jumpy than mid-last year, when those considering changing jobs was at an all-time high. The November 2010 survey reveale d that 50 per cent of all employees were considering a job change (versus 55 per cent in May 2010), 22 per cent were actively looking (versus 30 per cent in May), 13 per cent had applied for a new job (versus 22 per cent in May) and 2 per cent had changed jobs (versus 4 per cent in May). Grant Sexton says that while workplaces have become more stable, half of employees are still considering looking for work elsewhere so employers will need to work hard to keep their employees retained and engaged. The factors most likely to induce employees to stay with their current employer are salary increases (69 per cent), opportunities for career advancement (58 per cent), opportunities for training and development (52 per cent) and flexible work hours (37 per cent). In other words, employers will have to reward employees not only financially but with better working conditions and opportunities for growth, in an environment of greater security and openness. Managements lack of recogniti on of their employees was a key driver of workplace discontent when the economy began its recovery, says Sexton. It was a scary and quite alarming scenario six months ago, but employers appear to have got the message. They are now acknowledging the sacrifices employees made during the GFC and reassuring them about their futures.Management ResourcesOperations manager sample resumeOperations manager sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesBelinda Lyone - COS General ManagerArsalan Ali - Woolworths Trainee ManagerJustin Hillberg - General Manager at SurfStitchInterested in becoming a?Human Resources OfficerGeneral ManagerBusiness ManagerAccountantOffice AdministratorPopular Career Searchesnursing bewerbungsgesprch questions and answers new gradhow many words should a cover letter becover letter examples nursing new gradnew york cover letterjob interview question what animal are youManagement CoursesBachelor of Construction ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineAdvanced Diploma of L eadership and ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Applied Business (Management)Enquire Online Enquire OnlineGraduate Certificate in Business AdministrationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineJosie ChunRelated ArticlesBrowse moreCareer changeCareer progressionBuzzwords change managementChange management might be one of the scarier bits of jargon out there, but rather than running in the opposite direction when you hear it, arm yourself with the right attitude.
